I found the community I always looked for!

- Xavier

When did you start making music?
I started 5 years ago writing pop songs for other artists. Working with singers in the studios I realized that I really wanted to start making my own tracks. I didn't have any gear at the time so a producer I knew showed me how to use Rebirth. It was all I had but it really helped me to get started in the computer music revolution which is always getting better.

What drives you to make music? What inspires you?
I love all the creative processes. Before I started to make music I went to Film School, acted in movies and did television and several music videos. But behind the scene things can get rather stressful and chaotic in the film industry. There are just too many people with too much time pressure.

When you work in a music studio things are much more under control. And the thing I love about making electronic music is that you can do it anywhere; in a Starbucks, on an airplane or at your parents’ house. It’s pretty amazing to be able just shut out the world and make music with as little as a laptop.

How would you describe the music that you make?
I don’t ever like to think in genres because it tends to be limiting. I make electronic music, period. Call it what you want, but its all electronic music. I love the ever changing sounds of synths that rock music just can't offer and am a huge fan of the 80s. I really believe that our generation can take the spirit of the 80's even further.

Who’s your favourite producer or deejay?
I love Daft Punk (and their concept of anti-fame), Benni Benassi, Felix the House Cat, Rex the Dog, Pet Shop Boys, Eric Perez and Tiga. Currently I get most of my influence from the older stuff. I live for Yaz, Duran Duran ,Dead or Alive, Information Society, Depeche Mode and Human League. I get a lot of inspiration from these bands and love the innocence of the 80s. People didn't seem to take themselves so serious back then.

Which gear do you use?
I love to work with Ableton Live 7. It’s a lot simpler than the programs I used before and it helps me to work out my ideas in a fun and fast way. I also have the Novation Remote 25 SL with the Automap feature (pretty cool as it automatically assigns your plugins to the controller). The softsynths I use are D16's, Drumazon and Phoscyon. For vocals I work with Antares Autotune and I use Ozone for mastering. As for hardware synths I have the Novation X-Station, Casio CZ-101 (found for $20) and the Access Virus TI.

What’s your favourite tool or instrument?
That’s definitely the combination of Ableton Live and the Virus TI. The TI has really changed my life… it gives me that aggressive electro sound I was always searching for.

Which gear is still on your must-have list?
I would love to get the all the UAD plug ins and also want the FM8 synth and D16's devastator distortion unit. I will be to moving to Berlin later and plan on building a studio there. Then my big dream would be to get a Neve mixing board. I am very excited about moving to Europe. There is so much great new music there that never seems to break through in America. New York is a great city, but it’s getting harder and harder to be a full time musician here.

Why did you join I-dance?
The I-dance community is focused on electronic dance styles and I like the idea of being able to network with other producers. I don’t really know any other dance producers in New York and the input from the I-dancers is really encouraging and helpful. Without I-dance it would have taken me a lot more time to get to where I am now. I-dance inspires me to finish new tracks and get them out of my laptop and into the world. I truly feel that I discovered the community I was looking for.

How did I-dance help you so far?
I feel very encouraged to finish tracks I almost forgot about because I felt so disconnected from the electronic music scene. It’s nice to finish a track knowing that it not set in stone and to get feedback from other producers. It’s also interesting to hear what people on I-dance are currently working on. It basically gives me a preview of the new trends before they happen. And I’ve been really lucky to have had 2 tracks sent to several labels.

What’s your biggest dream?
I definitely want to be working as a full time producer and musician in Europe. I would love to connect with people who like what I do and motivate me to take the music even further. Success to me would be making a career out of something I love doing. Fame is not so important to me, in fact I feel it’s a bit cheap; all you need to do be famous is kill somebody. What's really important to me is to entertain people.

Where do you want to be in 5 years from now?
I want to be based in Berlin with my dog Ziggy Stardust (see picture) and to be traveling around Europe as a deejay and performer. But it’s pretty hard to imagine what things will be like 5 years from now. Everything is changing so fast. But I guess a record deal can’t hurt!

What’s your advice for people who have just started making music?
Keep it simple. Don't get caught up in always having to buy the latest and greatest new synthesizer. Buy one or two pieces of gear (or software) and really learn how to use them. It can take years to master one synthesizer, so take your time with it and learn all the things it can do.

When you keep working and check out a track you made 6 months ago you will be so surprised to see how much better you have become. Also, don’t be afraid to make music that doesn’t always fit into a box. Forget about genres, just have fun creating something the world has never heard before.
